Getting Ready for Thanksgiving

I’m going to do a little Sunday recap for all those folks out there who’ll be cooking Thanksgiving dinner. I’ve been writing content for the food section of TLC.com, a Discovery Channel website. They have lots of interesting cooking related information. This is stuff you might not easily find elsewhere, like how to cook [...]

Butternut and Sausage

Thankfully, I grew lots of butternut squash this year.  This time I tried something with meat for a main course.

Above are the ingredients (except sage) for a recipe that Rabia suggested.  It was a delicious pick, and relatively easy.
Herb Roasted Sausage and Butternut Squash
The sausage I used was poblano peppers with Mexican cheese.

The three of [...]

One is Better Than None

The artichokes kept growing with lovely, floppy leaves, but none of the thistles until the middle of September.  Then I discovered one at the center.  Two weeks later the other plant produced one at the same place.

On October 18th the view of the mountains look like this:

We also had an early frost on October 16th.  [...]

Apple Carousels

Here is a fun way to use apples.  Each person can design his or her own version of a carousel.   I’ve never found a child who didn’t enjoy this activity, even if they didn’t eat the finished project.
After washing and coring an apple, slice off the top and bottom.  Then divide the rest  into four thick slices, enough for two [...]

Pickled Okra and Armenian Cucumbers

After enjoying the refrigerator pickles last year, Iwanted to try pickling again.  This time I used the Armenian cucumbers, jalepeno and serrano peppers, an assortment of onions from the garden, and okra.  Mary Alice gave me some grape leaves which made them very crisp.

In both recipes I used less salt and sugar than called for.  [...]

Crockpot Butternut Squash Soup

If you search for butternut squash soup recipes you would find an endless supply.  I’ve picked a few to try since I have so many butternuts.  For this one I used only one big Waltham.

I had no trouble cutting the butternut lengthwise.  Maybe my knife was better, or the squash was not [...]

Soil Competition Final

The more they grow the more obvious it is.  The plant on the left is grown in MiracleGrow and the one on the right in Baccto.  Does looks more and more like it’s worth the extra money.  Now, I’m going to start using the basil for pesto, salads and other delights.

I decided I should also try another [...]

Tomato-Basil Pesto

The ingredients above are for the recipe below.  It’s a very simple and flavorful recipe.
Lidia’s Italy

The sauce can be blended while the spaghetti cooks.  The almonds can be toasted while the tomatoes and garlic blend.

I enjoyed the meal but it left me feeling there was something that could improve the taste.  After adding parsley to the [...]

Having a garden pond can really become your favorite thing

Having a pond near or around your garden really does more than just bring wildlife around; it can also bring forth a happy feeling and a satisfaction knowing you are adding to the environment in a great way.
Even if you start with a basic pond kit from a home improvement store you can bury the [...]

A South American perennial that’s sold as a commercial sweetener under the name Truvia in the U.S., stevia can be grown in your backyard herb patch and processed into a powder or syrup for use in cooking and beverages. To use stevia as a powder, dry the leaves a [...]
