There are 13 different types of vitamins that have been identified, that are necessary for our body’s well being and health. Each of them has a specific function, and a deficiency in any one can cause a health problem or a dysfunction of a body part or organ.

Vitamin A: Also known as retinol because it generates the pigments necessary for the proper functioning of the retina, Vitamin A aids in the formation of healthy teeth, skeletal and soft tissue, mucous membranes and the skin; it is also required for reproduction and breastfeeding and for good vision. A deficiency in Vitamin A can lead to night blindness, excessively dry skin and even dryness of the eyes. The body can obtain vitamin A from carotene, a vitamin antecedent found in vegetables like sweet potatoes, carrots, kale, and broccoli among others. Our body can also absorb ready made vitamin A from plant eating animals. Some of these sources are milk, butter, egg yolk.

Vitamin B: These are water soluble vitamins and are together called vitamin B complex. They are considered extremely important for the break down of carbohydrates into energy. They are also important for the formation of red blood cells, regulation of the healthy functioning of the heart and nerve cells, absorption of proteins and synthesis of hormones and cholesterol. Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pyridoxine, Cobalamin, Folate, Panthothenic acid and Biotin are all different types of vitamin B.

Vitamin C: Also called ascorbic acid plays an important role in maintaining healthy teeth and gums. It also aids in the absorption of iron and is important for the formation and maintenance of collagen, the connective tissue that supports many body structures. It also promotes healing as it is an antioxidant. A deficiency of vitamin C can cause scurvy. Although it is widely believed that vitamin C prevents colds and flu, these claims have not been collaborated under scientific conditions. Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits, fresh strawberries, cantaloupe, pineapple, and guava and vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, spinach, kale, green peppers, cabbage, and turnips.

Vitamin D: Also known as the ’sunshine vitamin’, our bodies are able to produce this vitamin by exposure to sunshine. Vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium and phosphorous and is thus essential for bone formation and for healthy teeth. A deficiency of vitamin D can cause rickets, which is a <a target=”_blank” href=”http://www.deformity of the rib cage, skull and bones of the leg. Sources of vitamin D include egg yolk, tuna, dairy products like cheese, butter, margarine, cream, fortified milk and also cereals.

Vitamin E: This vitamin is known to play a role in the formation of red blood cells although its entire function in the human body is still not fully known. It is also known to be an antioxidant. Sources of vitamin E are wheat germ, olives, corn, nuts vegetable oils, liver, and leafy green vegetables.

Vitamin K: This vitamin is vital for the coagulation of blood. Vitamin K is found in alfalfa, liver, cabbage, cauliflower and cereals. The bacteria in our intestines also produces vitamin K.

(Additional information on health, wellness, organic foods and nutrition is available at http://hartman-group.ecnext.com)

Supplements may not be the darling of the media they once were, but the importance of vitamins and minerals and herbal and specialty supplements (VMHS) to consumers’ health and wellness lifestyles should not be overlooked nor their role diminished. Because of increasing consumer health consciousness (due in no small part to an aging population), the rise of “self-care” and “self-treatment”, media attention and product proliferation, the supplement category continues to change and evolve – and remains complex.

Even the most advanced wellness consumers, who one might expect to shun any and all elements of the modern medical establishment, are still buying the one thing that symbolizes allopathic medicine to most of us: pills.

Past Hartman Group research has shown that consumers’ movement from periphery to core along the wellness continuum increases their likelihood of using dietary supplements. Some of the triggers that get people started may include nutritional needs, health conditions (such as high cholesterol or arthritis) and aging. The lack of knowledge people have about supplements initially inhibit some consumers from buying supplements. Additional inhibitors include price and the perceived lack of scientific proof of the efficacy of these products.

Consumers continue to purchase and use nutritional supplements, but with less intensity and exploratory nature than what we saw in 2000. Today, mid-level and core consumers appear to have identified key supplements that they use with some regulatory (ranging from three times per week to daily) and have decreased their exploratory shopping for new supplements. We also find new interest in key supplements such as green tea, probiotics and Omegas.

Consumers have dramatically increased the number of phrases and behaviors that define “wellness” to them from 2000 to 2005. Particularly notable is “taking supplements,” which is now seen as the path of wellness by 43% of consumers, nearly double the number in 2000 (23%).

The following language map illustrates the most predominate ways in which consumers think and talk about health and wellness. The map progresses from bottom to top, with the bottom representing consumers who are less involved in health and wellness (periphery wellness consumers) and the top representing those who are most involved in health and wellness (core wellness consumers). This map depicts several interesting shifts and changes from 2000. We find that wellness consumers still begin the journey with the desire to eat well, but with more intention towards living a healthier lifestyle.

The predominant themes of the language being used from periphery to core are represented by the black areas. The grayed “bubbles” represent secondary themes that run throughout the language analysis and support the primary themes. Supporting quotes, thoughts, tactics, activities, examples, etc. to what the primary themes mean to consumers are the white areas.

At the bottom, periphery wellness consumers have little or no brand recognition of supplements and knowledge is very limited. Moving up the ladder, brand awareness and knowledge increases among mid-level wellness consumers, but only moderately. At the top, brand awareness and supplement knowledge is at its zenith among core wellness consumers.

In general, except for the use of vitamins and minerals on an occasional basis, periphery wellness consumers have a much lower involvement with products outside of the traditional food groups.

As one moves towards the core, or top on the language map, the importance of specialty supplements to consumers increases more, relative to the other supplement categories, than the frequency in which consumers use the products. In practical terms this means that consumers use of specialty supplements lags behind vitamins and minerals, and herbal and specialty supplements.

Cultural Preferences to Health Products

Most American consumers address general health concerns (e.g., staying in shape, eating well, eating balanced meals, etc.) with daily, lifestyle routines and practices rather than targeted, acute responses (e.g., taking medication). At this level, most Americans use a vague “watching behavior (e.g., “I watch my sugar intake”) or, if they are more evolved wellness consumers, they incorporate lots of fresh foods into their diet to address current and long-term general health. What they tend not to use is a specific plan of action requiring health products that target a specific health condition.

When consumers are experiencing chronic or acute health problems (allergies, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, osteoporosis, etc.), we find that they definitely shift from more general watching behaviors and high level dietary overhauls (with the requisite focus on avoiding “bad things”) to more proactive and targeted health behaviors. In the case of this proactive set, those with diagnosed chronic conditions generally take medications and, if pushed, also alter their overall diet to avoid ingredients that might exacerbate their condition.

However, most consumers with chronic health conditions, we find, will end up turning to alternative medicine – to different pills. The chart below illustrates consumers’ preferred delivery of functional ingredients when asked which format they preferred vitamins, minerals and nutrients delivered in. Overwhelmingly, respondents chose pills (72%) compared to the next most popular format beverages (26%).

Consumers view dietary supplements as a key symbolic component that they use in their lives to challenge the hold that they view pharmaceutical companies have over them. The most successful dietary supplement products are those that focus on offering up modes of control, including prevention, for which modern medicine offers either poor solutions, last-minute solutions, or no solutions at all. This fits well with what consumers report as the most commonly used supplements including vitamin C, calcium, fiber and vitamins B, E and D. These supplements use levels reflects consumer concerns about and increasing roles for products that offer antioxidants, bone and digestive health, as well as an overall perceived “increase in wellness.”

If you love fresh spaghetti sauce or pesto, than you’ve just got to have fresh basil and other herbs all year round! Sure, a nice 1 X 4 window garden getting at least 4 or 5 hours of direct light from a sunny window will give you something to pinch here and there. Gardens with mint, rosemary, bay leaf, savory, oregano, chervil, sand thyme are some of the easiest to grow this way.

But what if you need your basil…and lots of it? Basil and cilantro need just a bit more light, and really prefer 8 hours or more of direct light each day. In addition to this if you want fresh pesto, just a pinch here and there is not going to cut it. Here’s what you can do about it.

The goal is a vegatative light cycle (18 hours on), with eight or more direct sun or bright artificial light.

Whenever the light levels are low, give them a boost. Two or three fluorescent lights above your plants will greatly increase their growth and yield. You can grow enough basil for a few servings of pesto now and then, and still have enough always at your fingertips.

Or, with a small metal halide light you would have a larger area with better lighting. You could surely produce an abundance of any herbs you choose for your culinary and aromatic delights. Basil would take well to the bright conditions under a metal halide, as it is a Mediterranean, sun loving herb.

It has been said that some herbs grow better, or should be grown in, poor soil. The oils in herbs make them special. Very fast growing herbs often grow plain leaves and stems more quickly than they can produce tasty essential oils. Often you will hear “basil grows better in poor soil” or “your basil will taste better if you don’t fertalize”. What these people really mean is “don’t grow your basil too fast” (sorry to pick on basil).

When growing in a container, it is a little different. The plant still needs some food to grow, and when that food runs out you will need to fertalize. However, as you will see in the next two sections, this is all taken into consideration together with the growth habbits of your herbs.

To keep initial growth rates in control, I use a soil mix with just enough nutrients. Mix 2 parts sphagnum peat to 1 part perlite, and than add 20 percent worm castings. Adjust the Ph of any mix using sphagnum peat moss by adding 2 teaspoons of hydrated lime for every gallon of soil mix. or You can substitute peat with coconut coir or vermiculite, which do not need Ph adjusting. Finally, I add 1 tablespoon of kelp meal for each gallon of soil to add plant hormones and to give beneficial micro-orgnisms something to feed on. Use this mix whenever you transplant.

If you feel the top of the soil and it is dry, than you need to water. Another way is to pick up the container and check how heavy it is. Your herbs like their soil to drain fast. You need to have containers with holes in the bottom, and you need to add an inch or so of perlite or gravel to the bottom of each container as you transplant. It is best to water thoroughly, but less often. Water the container until some water comes out the bottom.

When the herbs have been in any container for ten days or more, you need to begin feeding them. In a container, the roots are stuck in a small space and quickly mine it free of any nutrients, especially if you were going easy on the nutrients to begin with. Feed with half strength nutrient such as Maxsea 16-16-16 every two weeks.

If you really want to keep your plants healthy, I also recommend 10 ml/gallon Thrive Alive B1 and Maxicrop liquid seaweed in every drop of water you give to your plants. The B1 is vitamins and root hormones, and the seaweed is trace nutrients and plant growth hormones. This will help with essetial oil production. Finally, water basil from around the base…it does not like water on its leaves.

As soon as the herbs have grown enough leaves to be pinched without affecting their growth, you can begin using some of the herbs. This is usually about 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the herbs. Herbs like basil are best when harvested before flowers open. You will get your highest essetial oil levels when you harvest at the end of the dark period, assuming you do not leave the lights on 24 hours a day.

by: Andy Wiley

The first thing you need to do when deciding to create your own Herb Garden is to decide on the size of the plot of land you want to use. This will depend on what herbs and how much you want to grow. Unless you are an experienced gardener or a herb fanatic dont make your plot too big at first. Remember, you can always add to it later. You can create a raised bed to grow your herbs in and always add more when you decide you need to grow more. Remember to plan out your planting sequence and keep records of what is planted where as well as marking your planting with plastic nametags.

You need to remember that most herbs usually like well-drained soil so start your bed with a good layer of gravel that will help drainage. Place your soil on top of this but remember to add some compost into this. If you have a free draining soil to start with you should be able to manage without the gravel. Make sure your plot is in full sun as many herbs originate in the Mediterranean region.

Most herbs can be sown from seed so you can buy these from your local nursery. You can also buy small plants fort transplanting but there is nothing more satisfying than doing all the work yourself so try to grow from seed first. If you dont succeed then try small plants later but remember to read the label, as some plants such as coriander do not transplant very well.

Remember that you can also grow many herbs in small tubs or window boxes and can even grow them on your windowsill. Try planting Basil over the winter as long as it is indoors as Basil is a frost tender plant and will die after a single light frost. You can also try starting your seeds off early in the year to plant out as soon as the risk of frost has passed. An early start will give you herbs for longer. If you plant out too early you can always try covering your tender plants with fleece to keep the frosts off. If you live in a frost-free place, get cracking now.

Will Your Vitamins Be Banned?

by: Lee Cummings

Imagine this scenario by the end of next August…

You contact your favorite supplement distributor to purchase some of your usual vitamins and other supplements and you find out that they have all been banned!

Gone.

The joint support supplement you depended upon to keep your knees healing and pain free is now gone. The vitamins you loved to take to keep your energy level high and immune system strong – all gone.

You are no longer allowed to buy natural supplements as they are now classified as “medical drugs” Your former distributor explains.

Because they are now classified as “medical drugs” under the new laws, you are no longer free to purchase them.

What new laws? You ask.

A few years ago the European Commission passed the European Food Supplements Directive.”

What do European laws have to do with US? What right do they have to say what goes on in America!

What does Congress have to say about this?

Well, says your former distributor, Congress passed laws in the 1990s and made us members of the world trade organization. And as members of the world trade organization, according to Congress, The United States signed on to legally binding agreements to make sure our laws do not contradict with the world trade organization laws.

So what you are telling me is we no longer have our rights under The Constitution of the United States of America? Other countries and organizations have power over our country?

What can we do to stop this?

Well, we could have stopped this from happening back in 2004, however people were to busy with their own lives and the conflicts our country was involved in at the time were distracting. Meanwhile, our own legislators passed laws that stripped away our sovereignty and our rights.

Now its too late.

This is America in 2007 your former distributor explains

Think this cant happen? It IS happening right NOW.

In 2002 the European Union passed the directive on dietary supplements. This directive, which is part of a larger form of legislation called codex alimentarius, is a dangerous directive which takes away your rights as an American Citizen.

This is also supported by your FDA.

Right about now you are asking yourself

“Isn’t the FDA supposed to be looking out for my best interest when it comes to my health?”

Evidently not.

Are you aware of the devastating effects this will have on your health?

Because it is in violation of our sovereignty and existing Laws, this directive is yet another dangerous threat to our Freedom.

This directive is on track to take effect in the United States in less than ONE year. August 2005 to be exact, and the scenario above will become reality for all of us.

Unless You take action NOW.

Unfortunately, the U.S. media is silent about this disturbing news and the severe restrictions will take effect next August, 2005.

Will you let the freedom robbing directive creep up on you and strip away your freedoms?

Will you allow these laws to classify proven and safe supplements As medical drugs?

Naturally, healthy supplements are derived from food and therefore should be treated as food.

We in the U.S. already have labeling laws and mega dosing Laws as follows:

All labeling laws – This means if there are any restrictions as to who should not be taking the products, they are listed right on the label.

All mega dosing laws – These laws state: It is illegal to produce a product which will harm someone if consumed in large quantities, unless there is a warning on the label of the product.

All supplement manufacturers are required by law to follow these standards or they will not be in business.

Naturally as you take a serious evaluation of the consequences of compromising our laws, our constitution, our sovereignty and our Freedoms, You will begin to see that this directive is not for America.

I urge you to write YOUR senators and congressmen to support our rights to choose how to take care of our own health.

Make it clear that this directive is NOT for the U.S.

Take action now and write to your legislators before it is too late.

Let them know in no uncertain terms that you care, that you care About your health, that you care about purchasing safe, natural, sideeffect free solutions to your health problems.

Demand accountability from the FDA, urge your legislators to uphold your freedoms and stop the banning of supplements, vitamins, minerals and herbs which have a track record proven to be safe for thousands of years.

Find your legislators here:

http://www.senate.gov

http://www.house.gov

and express your wishes that they uphold our ability to choose safe and proven supplements and our freedoms!

Blood receives its color from the red blood cells which perform one of the most important tasks that the blood does for the body. Red blood cells are responsible for the transportation of oxygen throughout the body as well as for the removal of waste products. Because the average red blood cell lives for about 120 days the body needs to continuously produce a new supply of red blood cells. There are several vitamins and minerals that are essential to the creation of these cells and the ability of these cells to perform their important work in the body. The vitamins that make up the powerful and very important Vitamin B complex are a major factor in the production of red blood cells in the body. Vitamin B6 also called pyridoxine is a necessary part of the metabolism of red blood cells and is also required to make hemoglobin which is how the red blood cell transports oxygen. Men between the ages of 19 and 50 need 1.

3mg daily of Vitamin B6 as do women of the same age group. However, for women during periods of pregnancy the recommended amount is 1.9mg per day and 2.0mg while breastfeeding. Men older than 50 should have a daily Vitamin B6 intake of 1.7mg and women in that age group should take 1.5mg daily. The childrens needs however, depends on their age and size, dosages actually range from between .6mg to 1.3mg of Vitamin B6 per day.

Other B complex vitamins that have an important role in the production of red blood cells include Vitamin B2 also known as riboflavin, Vitamin B9 also called as folate in its natural form and folic acid in its pharmaceutical form and Vitamin B12 which is also called cobalamin due to its cobalt content. Iron is one of the minerals that is essential to the quality, quantity, good health and function of the blood. One of the most important tasks iron serves in the blood is in the production of hemoglobin. Approximately 60% of the iron in the body is found in its hemoglobin. The mineral copper is also involved in the production of red blood cells and through its enhancement of iron absorption by the body so too is Vitamin C. Vitamin E also helps in red blood cell production. These and the numerous other nutrients involved in making the steady supply of red blood cells essential to the bodys good health and well being demonstrate clearly the importance of the every day consumption of the standard recommended daily intake levels of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. Nutritional supplements can offer a reliable and safe means of making sure that your body has all the nutrients necessary each day to ensure that your blood remains healthy and strong. The quality of your blood will influence the quality of your life. A lot of people are actually suffering from iron deficiency anemia nowadays which can be caused by a lot of contributing factors such as lack of sleep, excessive stress and not having enough liver in take. All of these should be avoided so as to ensure that the anemia will not go on to becoming leukemia or any other irreversible damage to the blood.

Spices and herbs are common in most foods around the world today. Both are used to flavor foods and some for medicinal purposes. Herbs and spices have both been prominent throughout human history. In earlier times, herbs and spices were considered luxuries and only available for the use of the wealthy. Herbs and spices were also traded frequently between nations in medieval times. Many people do not know the difference between an herb and a spice. There are many similarities between the two, and some of the differences are very subtle, but they are still valid.

The essential difference between an herb and a spice is where it is obtained from on a plant. Herbs usually come from the leafy part of a plant, and are usually dried. However, some herbs can be used fresh. Spices can be obtained from seeds, fruits, roots, bark, or some other vegetative substance. Spices are not necessarily as fresh as some herbs can be. Herbs can be found many places around the world, while spices are more commonly found in the Far East and tropical countries. Herbs are considered to have a few more uses than spices. For instance, herbs have been used more frequently than spices in the medical field. Also, herbs can and have been used to augment cosmetics and preserve foods.

Some argue that there is no distinction between herbs and spices, considering both have similar uses. However, a botanical definition reveals that an herb is a plant that doesn?t produce a woody stem. It is common knowledge that in certain areas of the United States, a dried herb is considered to be a spice. This leads to more confusion because if a spice is simply an herb, then there cannot be a difference between the two. However, believing this is ignoring the fact that many herbs tend to be leafy green substances and spices are found in plants that are tropical in nature.

Because herbs and spices have so many uses and are great food flavorings, they have played important roles throughout history. The Portuguese navigator, Vasco Da Gama, sailed to India in search of spices. Even Christopher Columbus described the types of spices available in the ?new world? to investors after he landed. Herbs have been used throughout history for medicinal purposes. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), herbology (the study of herbs for medical purposes) has been used for thousands of years.

The debate between herbs and spices is ongoing. Some say that there is no difference, while others maintain that they are both completely different. Most learned scholars will say that the difference between an herb and a spice is found in where the herb or spice is obtained on the plant, and where that specific plant can be found.

Many of us take a hand full of multivitamins every day. Some of us even have cupboards that could be classified as a pharmacists shelf because it has so many pill bottles sitting there waiting to be taken daily. When we open up the cupboard to take our morning vitamins we turn into a popcorn machine. Popping pills every 30 seconds. Liquid vitamins are so much better. There are several excellent reasons for the change from pills to liquids.

First of all, pills are harder for the body to digest and absorb.

In fact, as low as 10-20% of the nutrients taken in pill form actually make it to the cellular level. That means 80-90% has to be eliminated by the body, which can be very taxing on your system. It also means that for every $100 you spend on nutritional pills, about $85 goes down the toilet. Liquid, on the other hand, has an absorption rate up to 98%.

On page 1542 of the Physician’s Desk Reference. This is considered to be the “medical Bible” and patients know this to be a very reliable source. The bar graph that reveals nutrients in a pill form are only 10 to 20% absorbed compared to a liquid form which is up to 98% absorbed.

Secondly, pills are hard to take.

Children and senior citizens in particular have a hard time swallowing the large number of vitamin and mineral pills, tablets, and capsules that they need to maintain health. More and more people are recognizing the need for supplementation of many different vitamins and minerals. At the same time, more and more people are getting fed up with trying to take a handful of pills every day. Liquid is just easier.

Thirdly, figuring out what combination of pills to take is difficult and confusing.

For example, if you take Vitamin E, you need zinc. But if you take Zinc, you need Copper and Vitamin C in a certain balance for the Zinc and Vitamin E to be effective. Being able to take everything in a liquid form that is already balanced for you just makes more sense.

Fourthly, there is a liquid vitamin/mineral product already on the market that is tried, proven and obviously superior to anything in pill form. That product is Body Balance from Life Force International.

The testimonies that are coming in from customers are absolutely astounding and the excitement is building. People are getting results that amaze even their doctors. In fact, thousands of doctors have used or recommend using this liquid product to all their patients, from infants to senior citizens.

Body Balance is absorbed within a matter of minutes, it saves your body energy on digestion. Many people don’t realize that digestion sucks up more energy than any other system in the body.
